Over the River

Kelly Wantuch

There was something about the way
His body looked ooo swallowed up by
The reclining ghost-white bed,
Dry Bartlett- faced with lemon-aid
Eyes expressing the words he was
Holding hostage. Eating sweet cubed
Watermelon moistening his
Parched lips into a smile as
He watched over Little Bobby
Playing with the scrap wood train he
Made for him; up and over the
Blanket mountains.

Closed flower shops . . .

Leaves a bare oaked
Casket weeping
At Christmas time.

POST FOR THE WEEK (First Week of Feb)

For the first week of February, my post.

First of all, this is the link to a previous post
that is germane for the next week and beyond.

Remember, in a bit over two weeks you'll need
to have 12 pages of Image/Text--start plastering
the pages.

In Abstract Expressionism read from page 14 through
page 18, and page 42 through page 69.

I know I've not talked much about the American Hybrid
but I will on Monday--we're covering a wide field of subjects
and ideas, so it's all like a slowly drifting ship.

Read the Capps book through to the end and WRITE
your poem--the Capps imitation. The poem is due
on Feb. 3.

Read John Ashbery's sestina ("Farm Implements and
Rutabagas in a Landcscape") and The Sonnets, by
Ted Berrigan, in the packet I handed out. Read "The Note"
on Gertrude Stein in the packet as well.

On Monday, Feb 8, there will be a short quiz on Abstract
Expressionism. I'll explain further on Wednesday, Feb 3.

I'll hand out some Dictionary Sonnets on Monday
by Laynie Browne. We will write in the lab on Feb 3.

REMEMBER SUPPLIES

As pointed out in last Friday's post:

For Wednesday:

Bring glue sticks (or glue), three or four magazines,
sketchbooks, pencils, paintsticks, charcoal, whatever
you've got, stuff to draw with . . .

In addition to looking at a couple Capps poems
and looking at the poems in American Hybrid
we'll do some collaging (and bring Nocturnal Conspiracies).
DATES FOR SKETCHBOOK CHECK-IN
and a Poetry Assignment tacked on.

February 17--12 pages (that's "covering" both sides)

March 10--21 pages

April 14--35pages

May 28--42 pages

You do not have to "fill" every page.

White space is part of each composition as well.

Collage elements and drawing/painting mixed
with your own text (from your various poems): 20-30

Collage elements and drawing/painting to
invent "narrative" (comics): 4-10

Collage elements mixed with drawing/painting and
found photographs from your personal "collection": 8-18

Collage elements mixed with whatever you want: 10 pages

The poetry assignment requires you to be in class
to receive the form and the assignment on Monday, January
25. It is an Ashley Capps imitation poem. It is
due on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

***

Wed, Feb 3 (5:30 - 6:45pm DW1235) is our next
lab day (erasures and dictionary poems).

I will repost this, or at least refer to it with a link,
at the scheduled time on Friday, along with other reading
assignments.
